Dear Parents,

Each year, the Humble I.S.D. sponsors an event solely for fifth-grade students. Manners Banquet, as it is
commonly called, is a rite of passage (of sorts) designed to encourage the use of proper etiquette, promote
confidence, and celebrate the transition from elementary to middle school. Throughout the year, similar events will take place throughout our school district.

Can you tell me more about Manners Banquet and when it will take place?
This year, the event will take place on Friday, January 12, 2024, from 12:30 PM until 2:30 PM in the cafeteria. Our students will eat lunch in a more formal setting. The meal will not be the traditional lunch fare, but rather a more sophisticated meal of breaded chicken breast, tri-colored spiral pasta, green beans, vegetable soup with shells, salad with ranch dressing and croutons, a dinner roll with butter, sherbet, and milk and water. If your child has a food allergy, please advise his/her teacher immediately so that his/her dietary needs can be met. Plastic trays or plastic utensils will not be used. Starched table linens, formal place settings, flatware, and glasses will dress each table. Each child proper formal dining etiquette which will include the use of appropriate utensils for a specific course, gentleman pulling chairs out to assist in seating a young lady, and more.

How much will it cost?
The Manners Banquet is hosted by Centennial Elementary PTO and funded by parent contribution through the Grade Level Party Fees.  In collaboration with Junior Achievement Committee and sales of Candy Grams, we have also raised funds for the Fifth Grade Fund class to cover additional cost associated with Manners Banquet & 5th Grade Shirts.

Who will attend Manners Banquet?
In addition to our children our Principal, Assistant Principals, our 5th Grade teachers, and other teachers who have been influential in the lives of our 5th graders. We believe the presence of these adults will encourage our children to utilize their best manners and engage in a more mature dialogue with each other and their lunch guests.

What should my child wear?
We ask that your child dress as if they were going to dine in a fine restaurant. Girls are encouraged to wear
dresses. A pair of dress slacks and a blouse will be fine also. Boys are encouraged to wear a dress shirt, tie, and trousers. Suits and Sports coats are always welcome. Dress shoes are strongly suggested. Please be advised that your child will be assigned a lunch companion from their 5thgrade class. What does this mean? Our boys and girls will sit in alternate boy-girl patterns at each table. Some students are hesitant about this arrangement,
however, seating them this way will encourage the use of good manners and proper etiquette.

Will there be any dancing?
NO, there will NOT be any dancing involved. Please assure your child that this event will simply be comprised
of a sit-down luncheon and a photo presentation.

Can I Volunteer?
YES, Parents will only be able to attend IF they are volunteers to assist with serving at the event. We are asking parents to wear white shirts with black pants/skirts for the event. We also need parents to help with set up and tear down.

All parents are required to complete a background check. If you have not already done so this year. Below are the links for background check AND the sign up genius for volunteering.
